When poor weather is cited as a contributing factor in a deadly car accident it can be difficult to determine who is really at fault. An investigation of all the facts and circumstances surrounding the accident is often necessary to ultimately place responsibility. But every time an individual gets behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, they assume a duty of reasonable care for other people sharing the road. Also, Louisiana law requires drivers to turn their headlights on and reduce their speed when inclement weather is involved. A March 9 car accident in Ibberville Parish, east of Lafayette, provided a grim reminder of the care that drivers must take when driving in poor weather.

A 19-year-old was killed in a two-vehicle crash as she was traveling southbound on LA Highway 411 at about 9:20 a.m. She lost control of her vehicle while negotiating a curve in the roadway. Her vehicle rotated over the center line of the highway into the path of a northbound car. The second vehicle struck the right side of the teenager's car.

The 19-year-old was severely injured and was later pronounced dead by the Ibberville Parish coroner. The other driver was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both of the drivers were properly restrained in seat belts, and authorities said they do not suspect any impairments of either driver. However, toxicology samples were gathered for analysis and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, according to standard procedure. Police indicated that wet roads and rain may have contributed to this car accident but also indicated the incident is still under investigation.

While it is possible that poor weather contributed to this tragic car accident, the injured party will likely be interested in the accident investigation. It is still too early to determine the precise circumstances or exact reasons that caused or contributed to the Louisiana car wreck. Nevertheless, one person has died and another was hospitalized. The family of the deceased woman, as well as the injured driver, will likely wish to evaluate the official report of the authorities once it is published in order to assess their respective legal rights and responsibilities.
