A Louisiana crossing guard was killed in early September while he was out directing elementary school traffic. Troopers investigating the car crash believe that the man was struck after two vehicles collided and one of the vehicles rotated, entering into the path of the guard. The man was wearing appropriate safety gear at the time of the accident.

Prior to the car crash, a 50-year-old woman was traveling west while driving a Mazda. A Honda driven by a 19-year-old woman was traveling north. The Honda entered into the path of the Mazda, causing it to strike the Honda's right rear door. After the vehicles collided, the Honda veered into the path of the crossing guard and struck him.

The 60-year-old guard was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by the local coroner. The two women involved suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital to receive treatment. At this time, driver impairment is not suspected to have played a role in the accident; however, toxicology samples were gathered and will be analyzed. The car crash is still being investigated.

Although all car crashes can remind people to be vigilant, ones that occur in Louisiana school zones can be especially frightening because children can be placed in harm's way. There have been no reports on whether the 19-year-old will face charges in the accident. However, the victim's family may wish to pursue legal action against her, should the investigation determine that she is responsible for the fatal car crash. There are no reports on any type of civil action as of yet, but the family of the crossing guard could choose to file a wrongful death suit at a later time. Although such an act won't change what happened to their loved one, it could provide an additional measure of justice against the wrong done to their family member.
